Almost three months after they were originally slated to meet, WBO heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs and unbeaten Sultan Ibragimov will finally get it on Saturday at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall (9 p.m. ET, PPV).
Briggs, from Brooklyn, N.Y., is the only American among the four heavyweight beltholders. Should Ibragimov, a 2000 Olympic silver medalist from Russia, claim the title, all four championship belts again will be held by fighters from the former Soviet Union. more info.
Instead, Russia's Sultan Ibragimov easily outpointed Shannon "The Cannon" Briggs for the WBO title Saturday night. Ibragimov's quick left hands dominated the listless Briggs to earn a 12-round decision.
"Tonight I will go to sleep as champion and will wake up as champion, and we'll see what happens after that," the 32-year-old Ibragimov said.
What happened for Briggs was simple: nothing. more info.
Briggs wasn't nearly busy enough, didn't throw nearly enough punches and didn't seem to want it badly enough, either. It cost him the WBO heavyweight title he won less than seven months ago. All three judges had Ibragimov a clear winner: 119-109, 117-111 and 115-113. The Post saw it 117-111 for Ibragimov (21-0-1).
Briggs, who battles asthma, said he was on medication that compromised his training. more info.

The shorter but rock solid Bradley quickly took control with speed and power from both sides - message delivered and received by the defensive in mode Camarena.

It looked like it was going to be an easy night for the hard-hitting undefeated junior middleweight contender James Kirkland, however, by the end of the evening he had picked up some extra schooling along the way.
The IBF's 13th ranked 154-pounder Kirkland scored a decisive and commanding ten round unanimous decision over Ghana's Ossie Duran and for the first time in his career went ten hard rounds. The southpaw Kirkland knocked down Duran within the first 20-seconds of the fight with a right hook behind the ear. The stunning blow dropped the African to the deck but he was able to beat the count and managed not only to survive the opening stanza but also bang with the talented lefthander for the remainder of the contest. more info.
The Telefutura Boxeo Friday offering from Cicero, ILL delivered a bit of everything for the viewer - opens with Dominican Daniel Jimenez in a one-sided unanimous decision over game but outgunned veteran Angel Chacon.
The down side in a blowout - referee Geno Rodriguez rewards victim Chacon with license to self-destruct when hurt and ready to be dressed in stanza six. The man in charge needlessly lets it continue with age 34 light punching Chacon not having a prayer. more info.
